Streaky Haystacks

On the road at 9am and headed down to Streaky Bay for a look, stopped at a shell service station where they had a plaster model of a Great White shark that some 21 year old bloke caught on his fishing rod, 22 kms out to sea - after a 5 hr battle!!! It was huge!!! 5 metres long and 1520kgs! And caught on 24kg line.....

They also had all sorts of other huge sea life models ie crabs, crags etc... Was very interesting:)

After looking at this museum, we totally forgot to go down to have a look at the foreshore..... SPEWIN! Didn't realize til we were to far away to go back:( oh well, next time......lol
From there we headed out to Murphy's haystacks - massive rock formations out in the middle of no where....they were really cool!

We found a wild bee hive, which was hanging off one of the rocks. Dad found some of the wax on the ground and picked it up to show the kids.... The bees were. It very happy that we were that close to their hive......


a bee tried to hide in Shana's hair which she handle very calmly.....NOT! (she's very scared of bees) we thought we'd got out but it was obviously had just moved to her scarf, and then it stung her on her chin:( not happy jan!!!

Thankfully she is not allergic, as we were far away from anywhere, and this would have been a not so good spot to be stung if allergic!!!

Which was built in memory of all the pioneering farmers in the area. It was really well done and would have taken ages!


Of course that means climb on it!! Haha
It was very cold at lunch time - in the sun was ok as long as you were put of the wind.....



Even the planes were cold!

Somewhere along the line we lost another 45 mins today.... Getting totally ripped off with our days!!!
Stopped in at Kimba (the half way across Australia) looking for a camp spot,

There was also a big Galah, when Mum E mentioned it we both thought she was talking about a real one but we found out it was this.....


Definitely not a real one!

There was a real one also, which kept the kids happy for a while because it copied everything that you said:)
We were going to camp at a stop in town but it was a bit crowded (we've been spoilt and like being by ourselves) and we couldn't hava fire so we headed out to a lake campsite 17 kms out of town, called Lake Gillies, which was a beautiful spot and well worth the extra kms...

After going for a walk to have a look around the area and lighting a camp fire, the kids did homework, we had dinner and then it was marshmallow time!!! Yummo:)

Ceduna

On Wednesday we rolled into Ceduna at about 10:30ish. To enter Ceduna we first had to go through the Quarantine check at the entrance to the town, they check for any fruit,vegetables or plant material, that you may have on board, if you have any you have to hand them over, (they are trying to stop fruit fly from entering) if you don't declare anything and they find some you get a big fine.

Dad Evans knew of a place that we could fill up with fresh water (we'd run really low over the last few days and were on rations)
We could have had a shower at that same petrol station, but we decided (mainly because I'd forgotten to get stuff out of the camper before we packed it down) that we'd have one when we set up camp - seeing that we had lots of water again:)
We had lunch on the foreshore in Ceduna, beautiful, but FREEZE YOUR NANNA's off COLD!!!!!!

Seeing that there was a jetty, well you can't NOT go for a walk on it, so even though it was very cold off we went walking on a jetty that, when you looked at its legs didn't seem very stable!




We survived the walk, and even got to get really close to a bird on the jetty that seemed a little put out that we dared to walk on his jetty.....


Kade seems very certain that this is an Arctic Skua ( I'll just have to take his word for it cos I wouldn't have a clue!!)

We headed out to Smoky Bay - nick-named that by Edward John Eyre because of the amount smoke from the fires of the indigenous people who lived there, and the name stuck:)
And GUESS WHAT? They have a caravan park there..... And there was no where else to camp, so SPEWIN!!! We HAD to go in a caravan park for the night..... With utterly divinely HOT showers, washing machine and dryer, and an awesome campers kitchen!
They had another jetty at Smoky bay, soooo off we went for another walk. The place was really pretty, not as good as WA beaches but pretty close:)

This is Great White Shark country so they have to swim in a cage to be safe......


Kade was allowed to take his rod and lure so he was the happiest boy in the world.....

Shana took her Saxophone for the walk, to spare the ears of the other caravan park residents:)(after some technical difficulties and a quick phone call to Mr Schoof [thankfully we're 45 minutes ahead])

Dad was very cold....

Shana and I had a shower for about 20 awesome minutes, came out wrinkled like prunes but pretty happy.... My hair was CLEAN!!!!! Yay!!!
That night we made use of the campers kitchen, thankfully, because Steve and Kade found some fresh oysters to eat with dinner - gross man!!



They have a great oyster and fishing industry in Smoky Bay so you couldn't get fresher oysters!!


No more kisses for either of you!!!

After a nice bacon and eggs dinner, (and oysters) we got to sit around the campfire that the caravan park supplied:) this was the cleanest, tidiest caravan park we have ever stayed in!! Unfortunately they have just sold it so who knows what it'll b like next time:(

Whales on the coast

Had brekky and packed up about 9:00am.heading for the head of bight whale watching platform.
Before we got there we stopped at the Nullabour road house where they are supposed to have Dingo's walking around, but sadly for Kade they didn't:( he's hanging out to see one!

At the head of the Bight is the Whale watching platforms. It is owned and run by the Aboriginal people of the area and is a great spot - they've done a great job and look after it really well.
That was well worth it!! It cost $5 per adult, kids under 12 were free:)
We walked out to the platforms and sure enough there were whales there!!

June to September is the mating and calving season of the Southern Right Whales. We saw at least 5 whales that were breaching, - they're not as exciting as humpback whales but still amazing!
When we went to the other end of the platform, Steve spotted a big shark waiting at the bottom of the cliffs. Sure enough there was a sea lion / penguin ( haven't all come to an agreement on exactly what it was yet) quickly dart off to the side little bay that would have been to shallow for the shark.... Phew!!!! Thought we were going to see it get eaten!! That wouldn't have gone down well!!
Kade reckons that the shark was a Bull shark but Dad E thought it was a small Great White, they haven't come to an agreement on that either lol:)

In the 2009/2010 Christmas holidays we did a trip with Dad and Mum Evans, and the Pleiter family going from Esperance to the edge of the Baxter cliffs, which is the start of the Great Australian Bight, so its pretty cool to be able to have photos from the other end!

It sounded to good to be true...... And it was!:( not a shower in sight!
Every day just when we decide that it's probably a good time to stop for the night, this is what the sky looks like......



It's been beautiful ALL day until setting up time. So Julie it's still happening over here!!!!!
Anyway that was an epic post and it's morning tea time so that's all from us today....

The Nullabour Plain

We found a beautiful campsite right on the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight! We had a great view over the ocean.... Was awesome to see the ocean again after all those days in the dust! Good ol sea air for the lungs! Much better - even though it was VERY cold and quite windy. The kids did their homework -which almost killed Kade - there was bush and cliffs to explore but he HAD to do homework - NOT FAIR!!! Shana even did her Saxophone practice by torch light Mr Schoof!! She reckons her fingers nearly fell off!! Today we are heading towards Penong, hopefully going to find a campsite a bit earlier so that we get to sit back and relax:)

Our Monday;)

Our Monday started at about 8:45am with us all back on the road....
We only drove for a short while today but had lots of stops.... One of the things that we experienced today was that we had to put our clocks 45 mins ahead so we lost 3/4 hrs!!! Kade thought this was great - bringing us that much closer to lunch time.... Til we reminded him that it also brought him that much closer to bed time!!! Haha:) We passed an awesome rainbow on our way to Mundrabilla, so I HAD to take a photo.... (I love rainbows) After lunching in Mundrabilla we traveled on to Eucla where there is an old telegraph station - (we have previously down other trips involving some of the other telegraph stations along the coast....) we JUST passed thru the Western Australian / South Australian border and are now driving in South Australia!!! Yay!! A first for all of our little family (Dad and Mum Evans have done it many times before) we are now looking for a campsite for the night...( involving the men getting out of the car, waving their arms around, trying to pick a spot and then going where their wives say to go) lol so gotta go.... So long the Barramundi's xx

Our Sunday

We woke to a beautiful day, nice to sit back and relax and hava day off and relax. We listened to a sermon on Titus 1 about choosing men suitable for office bearers, it was a great sermon to listen to, to remind us the importance of careful choosing. after the sermon we had coffee and cake while discussing the sermon. We were going to make some scones but the pan was in the coals and was a little too hot for the silicon baking tin so the whole thing caught fire and we had no scones!!!! ;( (see photo for a laugh) So later we used the pan to make a roast lamb dinner;) yummy!! We had lamb, potatoes, carrots, and corn on the cob, as well as peas and gravy, a feast fit for a king!! We followed that awesome dinner with waffle baskets filled with fresh cream and berries, very Devine!! (great idea Mum P!!) Shana also practiced her saxophone for us all and the other campers around us.... They were all fascinated!!! Ok enough from us.... Luv the Barramundi's xx

Homework on Saturday!!!!!

Because we were on the road so late yesterday, the kids had no time to do homework, (without getting car sick anyway) so their meanie of a Mum made them do it on Saturday.... I have photo proof!!!! :) after their homework was completed it was campfire time. We can have a fire every night thankfully because it is VERY cold!!!! The hot water bottles work a treat!!! I have also added some photos of our friday night camp spot looked like in the day time and what our 'home away from home' looks like on the inside..... We had our table extended for more room (thanks Jerry) and it is awesome!! No more banging elbows at the dinner table! Candy try to spot your contribution to our trip.... Lol ok gotta go to bed now:) til next time the Barramundi's xx
