The Outback Way Day 2

Because if the time change we woke up very early this morning. We were able to have two cups of tea and still get packed up and on the road by 8:45!!!!
We have a lot of driving to get done this week so the blogs might get a bit boring, sorry:)
We stopped in at the Tjukayirla Roadhouse (pronounced Dook-a-yirla) which is written up about on lots of travel blogs, for being the most expensive fuel station in the outback. The price of diesel there was $2.48.8 a litre!!!! That's very expensive!!!! If we were to fill up our whole tank it would be over $300!!!!!

The sign 70 kms before Tjukayirla....... There are HEAPS of dead cars out here so they've made good use of at least one......

Never seen a STOP dog before......lol

The Grand Central Road - on the left side is the Great Victoria Desert, and on the right is the Gibson Desert......

The Gibson Desert - not what I thought a desert would look like - no cactuses, or bare sand dunes.....lol

The Great Victoria Desert - lots of trees but not a spec of water, nor is there much wildlife around.....

I WAS trying to take a photo of us having lunch, but as you can see, Kade learnt his 'normalness' from his Dad.......haha

We found a great campsite at the back of a road side parking area, called The Pines. Out the back there was an old road workers campsite, which had lots of firewood so that's where we went:)

Out exploring our camp surroundings......

Our campsite....

From the other side....

Just sitting around listening to Shana play her Sax....... ( I keep threatening to put piggy tails in Kade's hair lol)

There were a few pesky flies, so we put on a fly net and then cut a hole in the front for the mouthpiece to go through........

The big fire that we had at night - had to start it early because we needed coals for our dinner......

Kade came running up and asked for a container to catch a scorpion in, after giving him an ice-cream container, this is what he did with it.... - maybe this is the safety head gear you need for catching scorpions!!!! Maybe that's what you should've been wearing Brad?????

These are the AWESOME coals that our fire made to cook our dinner in....
Michelle gave me an FANTASTIC recipe for pizza pockets to cook on the campfire....
- bazaar pocket bread
- 2 cans of spaghetti
- Diced bacon
- Tasty cheese
- Mozzerela cheese
I mixed the last four together ( i think the recipe said to layer them inside the pockets) and then stuffed the pocket bread with them.
After spraying some aluminum foil, fold them into parcels and pop onto some hot coals.
The time you leave them in the coals varies depending on how hot your coals are. We did them the same amount of time on both sides. We did one first to get the time right, then cooked the rest.....

All ready to go into the fire.....
Now you're going to think I'm a real dork, but I was so excited to eat them that I forgot to take a photo of the finished product - and well you don't want to see it now!!!! Lol
They were YUMMO!!!!! This is the second time we've had them and I think they might become a more regular item on our menu at home - I'll just do them in the oven!!!

Ok that's all from us today.....

The Outback Way

Monday morning began with a freezing cold wind!!! We didn't look at the gauge but it was pretty cold!!!!

Our campsite just down from Kata Tjuta.......(forgot to take pictures of the camp last night)

From another angle.......

Steve came across this soldier ant's nest.......

Check out the awesome entry!!!!!

We headed out, destination Warburton. We hadn't driven very far when we came across a camel bull walking down the middle of the road.... He was in no hurry to get off the road so we drove behind him for a while until I think we were getting too close for him so he slowly made his way off the road and stood there watching us as we stopped, took photos etc.... I think he thought he was a celebrity!!!

Just having a stroll.......

Who me????

The very wide, VERY dusty road that we are driving on.......

The sign to warn us about camels...... I think that camel bull didn't get the memo about the sign......

We visited Lasseter's Cave......
Lewis Harold Bell Lasseter was a explorer who claimed to have found a gold reef in The Outback in 1897. He had one or two attempts to find it again, one of which resulted in his death. This cave is where he sheltered for about 25 days in the January of 1931, stranded without food after his camels bolted about 15kms from here.

Weak from starvation, He set off around the 25th of January to try and walk to mount Olga (about 140kms away) in the hope of meeting his relief party....

He only made it 55kms, with the help of a friendly aborigine family, dying at Irving Creek in the Pottoyu hills on the 28th of January 1931. Apparently there are still people (including some of his family members) who continue to search for the gold reef......

This is the road that we're traveling on.......

We crossed over the WA border without any fuss..... There wasn't even a sign to say that we'd crossed it:( the only way we knew (apart from the gps) is because there were lots of quarantine signs etc! Also the clock on the gps was on 12pm one minute then across the border it was suddenly 10:30!!!!! An extra hour and a half to wait for lunch time!!!!

Obviously we're in the Outback.......

We saw more camels.....

Camel tracks.......

We came into the town / building of Warburton, where all of the fuel bowsers are locked into cages like this one. Next to the service station is a great big sign that says "lock it up or loose it" this is because if it's not locked up it gets stolen..... Maybe that's because diesel was $2.38.8 a litre!!!!! With no other options I spose they can charge that much:)

What a dude...... He's keeping an eye out for camels...... (I think he needs a haircut.....)

We found an awesome campsite in an abandoned gravel pit - these are great because they have nice open spaces to have a campfire in........

Shana doing her Saxophone practice......

They're doing controlled burns everywhere out here, which makes for great sunset photos......

Funky waves from the smoke......

A 'cute' little field mouse eating one of our marshmallows.......

We had some visitors to our campsite, which ceased to be so cute when there was more then just a few, we ended up crushing up some crackers and peanut butter with a little bowl of water, putting it faraway from our camper so they weren't tempted to come inside. So far it seems to have worked;)

That's all from us today....

Kata Tjuta ( the Olga's)

Saturday night was not as cold as other nights have been, so you'd think we'd get a good nights sleep right??? Well we were all nicely enjoying a good nights sleep when Kade woke up to go to the toilet (this is not unusual) he steps outside and then we hear a bloodcurdling scream.....Steve jumps out of bed and rushes outside - both of us thinking that he's been bitten by something - he'd walked right out into a dingo that was just outside our caravan..... It gave the poor kid such a fright that we couldn't get a word out of him for ages - and that's SAYING something - he never shuts up - not even in his sleep!!!! Well that was the end of a nice relaxing sleep.....
We had decided on Saturday that we were going to move to a different campsite today because where we were staying was pretty gross, there was toilet paper around everywhere, no where to have privacy (toilet kind of privacy) in general it was not somewhere we wanted to stay - we were just getting desperate for somewhere to pull up to yesterday because it was getting late.....
So we packed up and headed in the direction of Kata Tjuta.

We stopped off at a lookout (the sunrise lookout) for Kata Tjuta and took photos of Uluru ....... Still impressive from this far away!!!

Kata Tjuta from the sunrise lookout........

Driving up to Kata Tjuta is amazing also.....

Some of the AWESOME furniture that is at the lookouts........

Kata Tjuta up close.....

This is from the first lookout.....we decided to go on to the next lookout....

Someone's legs are a bit sore from climbing Uluru yesterday......(she was not the only one either.....)

Kata Tjuta means 'many heads' I think that this kind of looks like a chrome dome don't you????

More heads......

And some more.....

A cute little pigeon that was right next to the water tank where we filled our water bottles up......

And two more were sleeping in the sun under a tree.....

Some awesome colours.....

A gorge that we walked through...... Had to walk over rocky hills.....

This is what Kata Tjuta is made up of - it looks like smaller rocks all stuck together with cement.......

A piece that's fallen off - it looks like rocky road.....

The view from the second lookout.......one way.....

And the other way......
That was a beautiful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, enjoying God's beautiful creation. We ended up walking 5.4kms, which is pretty good seeing that Steve and the kids climbed Uluru yesterday. Now it was time to find a new camp and have church.

We turned down the road that takes us to the WA border where we found a campsite off the road and behind some trees..... A great little spot!!!
We listened to a sermon from Doctor J Smith from the Jubilee church in Canada, which was about that Hannah pays her vow to the Lord with joyful prayer....

We finally got a sunset photo of something......great job Steve!!!! (he had to climb onto the roof rack to take these photos)

Kade, as always mucking around with the fire........

A bit later I asked him to climb back up there because the horizon went blue.....it looks nice hey???? Thanks luvy:)

That's all from us today.....
